Can you still apply for a UK January 2027 intake? What is realistic from September 2026
If you missed September or your circumstances changed, January 2027 is still on the table for a lot of UK master's programmes. But the window is short. Here is what is realistic if you start now, in September 2026.
If you were aiming for September 2026 and missed it, or your plans changed, January 2027 is still on the table. But the window is shorter than most people realise, and the courses available are narrower.
Here is the honest picture of what you can still do, starting from mid-September 2026.
The realistic timeline, working backwards
Start in January 2027. Assume you need at least three weeks in the UK before your course starts to settle in and register. That gives you roughly a mid to late December arrival target.
Work back from there:
- Arrival: late December 2026 or first week of January 2027
- Visa granted: ideally by mid to late December 2026 (allow buffer)
- Visa applied for: as soon as you receive your CAS, usually mid to late November 2026
- CAS issued: after you accept your offer and pay your deposit, typically 1 to 3 weeks
- Deposit paid and offer accepted: late October to early November 2026
- Offer received: 2 to 6 weeks after application, so realistically by mid-October
- Application submitted: end of September to early October 2026 for popular courses, into November for some
If you are reading this in September 2026 and want a real shot at January, the next two to three weeks matter.
Which UK universities are worth looking at
Most Russell Group universities do not run January intakes, or they run them for only a handful of specialist courses. The universities that most consistently offer real January intakes across a wide range of subjects are the post-92 institutions and some newer universities. These include:
- Coventry University
- Ulster University
- Middlesex University
- London Metropolitan University
- University of Roehampton
- University of Bedfordshire
- De Montfort University
- Northumbria University
- BPP University (business and law focused)
- University of West London
- Kingston University
This is not an exhaustive list, and course availability changes each cycle. Always confirm on the specific course page of the university you are interested in, because a university with a January intake for one course may not offer it for another.
Which subjects are most likely to have January intakes
The pattern across UK universities:
Commonly available for January intake:
- MBA and MSc in Management
- MSc in Computing, Data Science, Cyber Security
- MSc in International Business, Finance, Accounting
- MA in Public Health, International Relations, Education
- Engineering master’s (mechanical, electrical, civil in some universities)
- Some LLM (Master of Law) programmes
Less commonly available:
- Medicine, dentistry, veterinary science (September only, with very rare exceptions)
- Most humanities programmes at Russell Group universities
- Undergraduate courses at Russell Group universities (some post-92 accept January undergraduates)
- Highly specialised or research-heavy master’s programmes
If your target course is not on the “commonly available” list, do a specific search for that course plus “January intake” on each university you are interested in before committing to the January route.
What you need to have ready this week
If you are serious about January 2027, these are the pieces to get in order in the next seven to ten days:
1. Your qualifications documented. WAEC or NECO certificates (or your undergraduate transcript, degree certificate, and any postgraduate transcripts if you have them). Scanned, legible, in one folder. If you are still waiting for original documents, get attested photocopies now.
2. English language proof. IELTS, PTE, or a valid alternative if the university accepts one. If yours is expired or you have not taken it, book it this week. Test dates fill up. A rushed IELTS booked mid-October is cutting it too fine.
3. Two academic references. Contact your referees now, not later. Give them at least two weeks and provide them with your CV, the course you are applying to, and a bullet-point reminder of what you did in their class. Their draft will be better and faster.
4. Personal statement. A different one for each application. Our post on writing a master’s personal statement as a Nigerian applicant covers what actually works.
5. Financial documentation. Universities will want evidence you can fund your studies before issuing a CAS. Bank statements, sponsor letters, or scholarship confirmation. Have these ready.
6. Two to three target universities. Not five. In a tight timeline, three focused applications beat five rushed ones.
What we would do if we were you
If you have not started yet and want to be realistic about your chances:
- Pick a mid-tier university with a strong January intake. A confirmed offer at a solid post-92 university is better than a rejection from a Russell Group.
- Have your IELTS booked before the end of this week if you do not already have a valid score.
- Apply to three courses across two or three universities, not spread across five.
- Do not wait to submit until you feel your personal statement is “perfect.” Get a strong, honest draft ready and submitted.
- Track deposit and visa deadlines with a written calendar. In a tight cycle, missed micro-deadlines are what cost people the intake.
If you are further along (already have IELTS, already have a shortlist, personal statement mostly drafted), you are in a stronger position and can afford a slightly more ambitious application list.
What we cannot promise
A January intake at a Russell Group university if your profile is not already highly competitive. A scholarship large enough to change your total cost calculation for January specifically. A visa if your circumstances are complicated (this is not immigration advice; always consult a registered immigration adviser for anything visa-related).
What we can help with: honest read on which universities and courses are realistic given your profile, help getting your application together in the right order, and a plan for the next four to six weeks so nothing slips through.
The whole thing in a sentence
January 2027 is still on the table for a lot of UK master’s programmes, but the courses are narrower than September and the popular ones close application windows between mid-October and end of November 2026, so if you start now with two or three focused applications you can realistically make it.

Common questions from applicants
-
Do UK universities have a January intake?
Yes, many do, particularly for master's programmes and some undergraduate courses. It is smaller than the main September intake, so fewer courses are open and competition per spot can be tight, but it is a real option. Business, computing, engineering, and public health master's programmes are the most common January-intake courses.
-
What are the application deadlines for UK January 2027 intake?
They vary by university and course, but most popular courses close applications between mid-October and end of November 2026. Some smaller programmes accept into December. If you are applying with a study permit or visa still to arrange, you need to submit even earlier than the university deadline to give processing time.
-
Is it too late to apply if I start in September 2026?
Not for everyone. If you already have your qualifications documented, an IELTS score valid, and one or two universities in mind, you can realistically get an application in within two to three weeks. If you are starting from scratch (still need IELTS, still deciding on courses, references not sorted), it is very tight but not impossible for the later-deadline courses.
-
Which UK universities offer January 2027 intake for Nigerian students?
Many, including a lot of the post-92 universities and some Russell Group institutions. Coventry, Ulster, Middlesex, London Metropolitan, Roehampton, Bedfordshire, De Montfort, and Northumbria are among those that regularly run January intakes. Always check the specific course page on each university's website for the current cycle.
-
Are scholarships available for January intake?
The big fully-funded ones (Chevening, Commonwealth Master's, Gates Cambridge) are almost all September intake only. For January, most funding comes from university-specific scholarships and partial fee waivers, which vary by institution. Do not apply for January expecting a Chevening-level scholarship to appear.
-
Can I still get a UK visa in time for January 2027?
This is not immigration advice — you should always check current processing times on the official UK government website or with a registered immigration adviser. Broadly, once you have your CAS (issued by the university after you accept an offer and pay a deposit), the standard Student route visa processing takes a few weeks. Add buffer for anything that goes wrong. Working backwards from a January start, that means a firm offer and paid deposit in November at the very latest.
